Friction modifiers increase the efficiency of engines

Reducing friction brings about an increase in the efficiency of engines and gearboxes and hence a saving in energy as a result.

Friction modifiers are generally polar molecules that are attracted by the adsorption forces of the metal. This leads to the formation of films that decrease the friction between the surfaces moving relative to each other.
